Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry started a trend when he came out with The Next Generation in the late 80s. Shows since then have been re-imagined or advanced in a universe’s time line. When a person talks about the next generation of television, he is not necessarily talking about a continuation of someone’s favorite television shows.
